So I had nothing left on my reading list and decided to go hunting on Amazon for some fiction, my preferred genre being thrillers.
Lee Child is the author of the Jack Reacher series, a character who is a one man army going about delivering his own brand of justice. In fact, Tom Cruise’s Jack Reacher, was based on Lee Child’s One Shot. Jack Reacher is over six feet tall and built like a tank, whereas Tom Cruise is…, well, let’s not go there.
Suffice to say that the movie does justice to the book – inasmuch that a couple of hours of film can do justice to a 485 page (paperback) book.
Back to my book hunting.
I came across an interestingly titled book, Don’t Know Jack (The Hunt for Reacher Series #1), By Diane Capri, and went hmmm. The description had a line by Lee Child praising Diane Capri’s writing and that was enough for me to buy the book.
The book is about a couple of FBI agents trying to track down Jack Reacher and the starting point for their hunt is Margrave, Georgia, where Jack Reacher made his debut in Killing Floor.
Diane Capri’s book had so many irritants in the book that I gave up reading after about fifteen odd pages.
My issues with the book are many, one of them being the way the two FBI agents made snap judgements. For example, the lead agent, Kim Otto, is handed Reacher’s file and decides he is psychotic, a stone cold killer, just on the basis of whatever is on the file.
For some reason I was under the impression that FBI agents were more balanced.
This post is not a book review. You can make your own judgement if and when you read the book. This post is because I just can’t get it why Diane Capri wrote this book and a couple of others subsequently on Reacher.
Now there are plenty authors who not only write about other authors’ characters but also continue the legacy of work of those other authors. Eric Van Lustbader, author of those splendid Ninja books featuring Nicholas Linnear, continued writing the Jason Bourne books after Robert Ludlum died.
All such books are feature the character created by other authors.
Diane Capri’s Reacher books do not, and to hell with spoiler alerts.
Jack Reacher does NOT appear in any of Capri’s Reacher books. Reacher is only referred to in her books.
And this is what has been bugging me all these days. Why would you write a book(s) that referred to Jack Reacher but did not feature him at all. Heck, even fanfiction feature the central characters!
A cynic would say this is Diane Capri capitalizing on the Reacher phenomenon. But Capri seems to be an established author in her own right – #1 Amazon Best Selling author and all that. She has various series based on her own creations and they seem to be doing well.
I just don’t get it. If you do, let me know!
