To me writing is .. complex and easy. Dreams that occur when you sleep are possibly
collections of images, memories, thoughts along with the sorting of stimuli and stresses in our waking life. The brain works in strange ways that we don’t fully understand. Writing comes from that same source for me.
I never intended to write stories. I love to read and often would finish a chapter and say to myself, “How do they come up with these things?” Yet one day I was at my store and it was very quiet. There were no customers (it was April 15th- tax day!) and I sat down at my computer and this story came out of my fingers and started to fill the page. It was like a dream. The main character was frightened and running through the woods to a place and a person where she felt she would be safe.
When a story has it’s teeth in me I can’t write fast enough. It’s like a race. When I get caught up with writing the movie in my head I pause and catch my wind. I’ll mull over the story and play with situations and scenarios ..sort of feeling for my footing on uncertain ground. That interval can be an hour to a week or more then I’m off and running again.
I recognize some of the elements from my life but not all. Many are entirely from my imagination but when they come together in a story it is cathartic. I feel I have visited someone that I miss or I have solved a problem that in my real world I haven’t the power to fix. It is freeing, fun and sometimes frustrating but it’s always fascinating.
I write fantasy-scifi so I have the power to create my own world and work through problems that we face on Earth. I’ve been able to visit with my beloved grandmother who passed away thirty years ago by creating a character similar to her and have played again with a pet from my teen years. I can make politicians work together and have karma happen to the bad guys. Woven around all of those small pieces are the stories that I hope captivate you.
Thank you for allowing me to guest blog on your blog. It’s been fun.
